How would one define a winning mentality?

Just look at George Bennett`s impressive performance in the final stage of the Giro d`Abruzzo today.

With a strategic move on the HC climb and relentless support from the IPT squad headed by the on fire Matthew Riccitello, Bennett showcased true grit, pushed the limits and secured a podium finish (third overall) ending a two-year drought.

So is George Bennett back?

With a Kiwi smile, George said: “Not yet. For that, you will have to wait for the summer when I will hopefully be at my best.”

When George Bennett finished in 5th place on the 14 km mountain top finish at the Giro d`Aruzzo Queen stage this afternoon , he was torn between two conflicting emotions.

“Although I`m a bit disappointed for not winning, it’s nice to be back at the head of races after a while in the wilderness," Bennett reflected.

"Since I signed with this team, it`s been a bit of a project, with a lot of people helping me get back into shape. I can definitely see that I`m returning to the rider I was a few years ago, so that`s encouraging heading into the summer."

21 second behind the leader, Bennett is looking ahead to tomorrow’s final stage:

“We`re in the race to win. It’s a bike race, and we try to win every race. Otherwise, why are we here?"

“We lost the battle today a little bit, but not the war. I woke up this morning looking to win the race. it`s who we are”.

Those were the encouraging words transmitted over the team radio by Israeli Sports Director Dror Pekatch, moments after the conclusion of the second stage of the Giro di Abruzzo.

And he was spot-on. The takeaway for IPT was straightforward: Our two GC contenders, George Bennett (8th) and Matthew Riccitello, finished among the elite group, the "Big Dozen," 12 riders who crossed the line with a 42-second gap, behind the clear solo winner, Jan Christen from Team UAE.

The stage is set for tomorrow`s pivotal showdown, undeniably the Queen Stage, featuring two categorized climbs including the Hors Caregorie 14 km climb to the finish.

“It`s all going to come down to the legs," Bennett remarked.

And when questioned about “his legs” he offered a smile:

“I`ll know for sure tomorrow afternoon.”’

An off day for our Israeli Champion, Itamar Einhorn, in the @IlGirodAbruzzo opener saw his young teammate, @rotem_tene step into the spotlight.

Despite a mechanical issue near the finish that slowed him down close to the finish line, tomorrow offers him another opportunity before it becomes our climbers time to shine.
