The Tour of Turkey has traditionally been a favourable race for BORA - hansgrohe. The goal for this year’s edition (April 21st to 28th) is to further improve this record.One overall victory, a second place, and a total of seven stage wins – that’s the impressive record of BORA - hansgrohe in the last five editions of the Tour of Turkey. The goal for this year’s race is to further improve these statistics. Bernhard Eisel, who is the sports director in Turkey, is optimistic that the WorldTeam from Raubling will put on a strong showing once again. “The race is a test for our sprint train – accordingly, we are well-prepared. And since this year’s route includes several flat stages, we definitely aim to compete for stage victories,” he says.Among others, BORA - hansgrohe is sending Sam Welsford, one of the strongest sprinters of the current WorldTour season, to the Bosporus. The Australian kicked off the season with three stage wins at the Tour Down Under and recently demonstrated his good form with a seventh-place finish at the Scheldeprijs. Also on the start list is the fast-finishing classics specialist Danny van Poppel (Netherlands), who recently placed third at the one-day race Classic Brugge-De Panne. Supporting these two sprinters will be Ryan Mullen (Ireland), Frederik Wandahl (Denmark), Luis-Joe Lührs (Germany), Alexander Hajek (Austria), and Filip Maciejuk (Poland).<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/sprintcyclingagency_0756755_1_2000px_fef2fb3222.jpg"></figure>Analysing the stage profiles, at least half of the eight stages of the Tour of Türkiye 2024 are expected to finish with a bunch sprint. For Bernhard Eisel, these are ideal conditions to test the sprint train around Welsford and Van Poppel in race action. “The competition is strong. Nevertheless, we aim to win stages,” says Eisel. However, the Sports Director also emphasises that results are not the only focus in Turkey: “When it comes to the sprint and the sprint preparation, details are crucial. Thus, we plan to use the stages to enhance our fine-tuning,” he mentions, indicating that detailed analyses and meetings will surround the races. Die Türkei-Rundfahrt ist traditionell ein gutes Pflaster für BORA - hansgrohe. Das Ziel bei der diesjährigen Auflage (21. bis 28. April) ist, diese Tradition fortzusetzen.Ein Gesamtsieg, ein zweiter Platz und insgesamt sieben Etappensiege – das ist die erfolgreiche Bilanz von BORA - hansgrohe bei den letzten fünf Austragungen der Tour of Türkiye. Bei der diesjährigen Auflage soll diese Bilanz weiter aufgebessert werden. Bernhard Eisel, der als Sportlicher Leiter in der Türkei im Einsatz ist, ist jedenfalls optimistisch, dass sich das Raublinger WorldTeam auch dieses Mal stark präsentieren wird: „Das Rennen ist eine Bewährungsprobe für unseren Sprintzug – dementsprechend gut sind wir aufgestellt. Und da es im diesjährigen Streckenprofil mehrere Flachetappen gibt, wollen wir auf jeden Fall um Etappensiege kämpfen“, sagt er.Unter anderem schickt BORA - hansgrohe mit Sam Welsford einen der stärksten Sprinter der bisherigen WorldTour-Saison an den Bosporus. Der Australier hatte zum Saisonauftakt bei der Tour Down Under drei Tageserfolge geholt und zuletzt mit einem siebten Platz beim Scheldeprijs seine gute Form bewiesen. Ebenfalls am Start ist der endschnelle Klassikerspezialist Danny van Poppel (Niederlande), zuletzt Dritter beim Eintagesrennen Classic Brugge-De Panne. Für Bernhard Eisel ideale Voraussetzungen, um den Sprintzug um Welsford und Van Poppel im Renneinsatz zu testen. „Die Konkurrenz ist gut. Dennoch wollen wir Etappen gewinnen”, sagt Eisel. Der Sportliche Leiter betont allerdings auch, dass es in der Türkei nicht nur auf Ergebnisse ankomme: „Bei der Sprintvorbereitung zählen Details. Dementsprechend wollen wir die Etappen auch nutzen, um unsere Feinabstimmung zu verbessern“, erklärt er und verrät, dass es rund um die Rennen entsprechende Analysen und Besprechungen geben werde. The Irish newcomer celebrates his biggest success to date, giving Team GRENKE - Auto Eder another international top result.A stage victory, four days in the leader’s jersey, and ultimately a strong third place in the general classification – that’s the summary of Team GRENKE - Auto Eder’s performance at the stage race Eroica Juniores. The four-day event around Siena, Italy, is part of the UCI Nations Cup, the premier racing series in U19 cycling. Accordingly, the competition is traditionally strong. This year’s edition featured numerous national teams and some of the strongest European U19 teams.Team GRENKE - Auto Eder demonstrated its strength from the start. The BORA - hansgrohe U19 team decisively won the opening team time trial, taking the overall lead. In the following stages, Irish team rider Patrick Casey skilfully defended the red leader’s jersey and only lost it on the very last day. Nonetheless, Casey secured a remarkable third place in the overall standings. Impressively, the Irish talent had joined Team GRENKE - Auto Eder through the “Red Bull Junior Brothers” programme. His third place was now his greatest international success to date.While Team GRENKE - Auto Eder’s performance was overwhelmingly positive, the team also faced several setbacks. Numerous crashes across all five stages forced many riders to retire from the race. With Paul Fietzke (Germany), Theodor August Clemmensen (Denmark), Lorenzo Finn (Italy), and Thibaut Van Damme (Belgium), also four team members had to abandon. This was especially unfortunate as all four were in very good shape, with Fietzke initially leading the race after the first stage.Team GRENKE - Auto Eder’s next race is the Grand Prix West Bohemia, which will be held on April 27th and 28th in Kyšice, Czech Republic.&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Quotes from the finish line</h3>“The last stage was very difficult and I was constantly attacked by other riders. Der irische Neuzugang feiert seinen bis dato größten Erfolg – und beschert dem Team GRENKE - Auto Eder eine weitere internationale Top-Platzierung.Ein Etappensieg, vier Tage im Trikot des Gesamtführenden und am Ende ein starker dritter Platz in der Gesamtwertung – das ist die Bilanz des Team GRENKE - Auto Eder beim Etappenrennen Eroica Juniores. Die viertägige Rundfahrt in der Region rund um Siena ist Teil des UCI Nations Cup, der wichtigsten Rennserie im U19-Radsport. Dementsprechend stark ist das Rennen traditionell besetzt. Auch bei der diesjährigen Auflage standen zahlreiche Nationalmannschaften sowie einige der stärksten europäischen Junioren-Teams am Start.Das Team GRENKE - Auto Eder bewies dabei von Beginn an seine Stärke: So gewann das U19-Team von BORA - hansgrohe das Mannschaftszeitfahren zum Auftakt deutlich und übernahm damit die Gesamtführung. Im weiteren Verlauf war es der irische Teamfahrer Patrick Casey, der das rote Führungstrikot mit einer klugen Fahrweise verteidigte und erst am allerletzten Tag abgeben musste. Dennoch schaffte Casey mit Rang drei in der Gesamtwertung ein absolutes Top-Resultat. Besonders beeindruckend: Casey kam über das Nachwuchsprogramm „Red Bull Junior Brothers“ zum Team GRENKE - Auto Eder. Nun feierte er seinen bis dato größten internationalen Erfolg.Während die sportliche Bilanz des Team GRENKE - Auto Eder äußerst positiv ausfiel, musste man in Italien allerdings auch einige Rückschläge hinnehmen. Zahlreiche Stürze auf allen fünf Etappen sorgten dafür, dass viele Fahrer das Rennen mit Blessuren aufgeben mussten. Darunter befanden sich mit Paul Fietzke (Deutschland), Theodor August Clemmensen (Dänemark), Lorenzo Finn (Italien) und Thibaut Van Damme (Belgien) auch vier Athleten aus den Reihen von GRENKE - Auto Eder. Besonders bitter: Alle vier waren in ausgezeichneter Form, Fietzke hatte die Rundfahrt nach der ersten Etappe sogar angeführt.Das nächste Rennen für das Team GRENKE - Auto Eder ist nun der Grand Prix West Bohemia am 27. und 28. The Tour of the Alps sees Emil Herzog and Cesare Benedetti, the youngest and oldest BORA - hansgrohe athletes, line up together. We spoke with both before the start of today’s stage.When Cesare Benedetti competed in his first Tour of the Alps, Emil Herzog was just attending kindergarten. Back in 2010, the stage race through the Alps was still called the Giro del Trentino and primarily took place in Northern Italy. Benedetti and the predecessor to the BORA - hansgrohe team, NetApp, were in their first season in the professional peloton. “I remember the race well. It was one of the highlights of our racing calendar. As a small Continental team, we were the underdogs in the line-up,” Cesare recalls.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Cesare Benedetti: The experienced one&nbsp;</h3>What followed was a story of success: rising through the ranks with NetApp, then with BORA - Argon 18 (from 2015), and later BORA - hansgrohe (from 2017), he reached the WorldTour level. Among his notable accomplishments, “Cece”, as his teammates call him, won a stage at the Giro d’Italia in 2019. He also left a mark at the Giro del Trentino, the forerunner of the Tour of the Alps 2015, when he was part of the BORA - Argon 18 team that won the initial team time trial, and he held the overall leader’s jersey for a day. “That race was exceptionally special as it included a leg through my hometown,” Cesare remembers.In 2024, Cesare is set to participate in the Tour of the Alps for the seventh time. Now 36 years old, he is among the most experienced riders in the peloton. Interestingly, the race also features 19-year-old Emil Herzog, currently the youngest BORA - hansgrohe athlete. Cesare smiles: “I still feel quite young. But during a team training camp, I rode with Emil, and it hit me how quickly time has passed. He could almost be my son,” he laughs.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Emil Herzog: The Youngster</h3>While Cesare approaches the Alps as an experienced mentor, Emil sees the race as an opportunity to learn. “I've just entered the WorldTour and have relatively little experience. That’s why it’s fantastic for me to be able to benefit from the knowledge of experienced pros like Cece,” says the German rider. “'It’s the little details – like how to position oneself in the peloton or how to manage energy across stages – these are aspects that operate very differently among the pros compared to the junior levels,” he continues.After a strong spring where he gathered his first experiences in the WorldTour peloton, Emil sees the Tour of the Alps as an opportunity for further development. “The Tour of the Alps is a tough race, with many climbs and technically challenging descents. It’s quite different from the spring classics,” he says. Cesare believes Emil is up to the challenge: “Emil is a great talent. He got off to a good start in the WorldTour. Bei der Tour of the Alps stehen der jüngste und der älteste BORA - hansgrohe Profi gemeinsam am Start: Emil Herzog und Cesare Benedetti. Wir sprachen mit beiden vor dem Start der heutigen Etappe.Als Cesare Benedetti seine erste Tour of the Alps bestritt, ging Emil Herzog noch in den Kindergarten. 2010 hieß das Etappenrennen durch die Alpen noch Giro del Trentino und führte vornehmlich durch Norditalien. Benedetti und das BORA - hansgrohe Vorgänger-Team NetApp absolvierten damals gerade ihre erste Saison im Profi-Peloton. „Ich erinnere mich noch gut an das Rennen. Für uns war es eines der Highlights im Rennkalender. Als kleines Continental-Teams waren wir die Underdogs im Starterfeld“, sagt Cesare, als wir mit ihm über das Rennen sprechen.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Der Erfahrene im Team&nbsp;</h3>Was folgte, war eine Erfolgsgeschichte: Gemeinsam mit NetApp, später Bora - Argon 18 (ab 2015) und schließlich BORA - hansgrohe (ab 2017) stieg er in die WorldTour auf. Unter anderem gewann „Cece“, wie er im Team kurz genannt wird, 2019 eine Etappe beim Giro d'Italia. Auch beim Tour-of-the-Alps-Vorgänger Giro del Trentino hinterließ er seine Spuren: 2015 gewann er mit BORA - Argon 18 das Auftakt-Teamzeitfahren und trug anschließend einen Tag das Trikot des Gesamtführenden. „Das war ganz speziell, denn das Rennen führte unter anderem durch mein Heimatdorf“, erinnert sich Cesare.2024 steht Cesare bereits zum siebten Mal bei der Tour of the Alps am Start. Mit inzwischen 36 Jahren gehört er dabei zu den erfahrensten im Feld. Das Besondere: Mit dem 19-jährigen Emil Herzog ist auch der derzeit jüngste BORA - hansgrohe Profi bei der Tour of the Alps am Start. Cesare muss schmunzeln: „Ich fühle mich eigentlich noch recht jung. Aber während eines Team-Trainingslagers bin ich zusammen mit Emil gefahren und mir ist klar geworden, wie schnell die Zeit vergangen ist. Er könnte fast mein Sohn sein“, lacht er.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Der Youngster im Team</h3>Während Cesare in den Alpen die Rolle des erfahrenen Mentors einnimmt, ist das Rennen für Emil eine Möglichkeit, viel zu lernen. „Ich bin frisch in die WorldTour gekommen und habe dementsprechend recht wenig Erfahrung. Für mich ist es daher genial, wenn ich vom Wissen erfahrener Profis wie Cece profitieren kann“, sagt der Deutsche. „Besonders die kleinen Details – etwa wie man sich im Peloton positioniert oder wie man die Energie über die Etappen hinweg managt – das sind Dinge, die bei den Profis ganz anders ablaufen als in den Nachwuchsklassen.“Nach einer starken Frühjahrssaison, bei der er seine ersten Erfahrungen im WorldTour-Peloton sammelte, sieht Emil die Tour of the Alps als eine Gelegenheit, sich weiterzuentwickeln. „Die Tour of the Alps ist ein hartes Rennen, mit vielen Anstiegen und technisch anspruchsvollen Abfahrten. Das ist noch einmal etwas ganz anderes als die Frühjahrsklassiker“, sagt er. Cesare ist sich sicher, dass Emil auch diese Challenge meistern wird: „Emil ist ein großes Talent. Er hatte einen guten Start in die WorldTour. The Itzulia Basque Country Tour, which was unfortunately overshadowed by severe crashes, concluded with its Queen Stage in Eibar. Following two crashes, the then-leader and winner of the opening time trial, Primož Roglič had to abandon the race. Fortunately, however, he escaped without any fractures. On the penultimate stage, it seemed that the tide was turning for the team from Raubling. Maximilian Schachmann demonstrated that he is regaining his old strength after battling through injuries and illness. The German headed into the final stage having taken a podium place and sitting in second overall. The final day of racing around Eibar was poised to be decisive in the battle for the overall victory, with the top eight riders being separated by only 15 seconds. Maximilian managed to stay in the leading group until about 30 km before the finish. However, as the race fragmented on the penultimate demanding Izua climb, he had to let his competitors go up the road. Ultimately, with Carlos Rodríguez claiming victory, Maximilian finished in 26th place. This secured him the 13th position in the overall standings, while teammate Jai Hindley finished the stage in 14th place, improving to 12th position in the general classification.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/sprintcyclingagency_0790742_1_2000px_06ad5889d8.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;From the Finish Line "Overall, this past week presented a mixed bag of outcomes for our team in the Basque Country. Our week started on a high note with a commendable team effort resulting in a win in the individual time trial with Primož. As the race progressed, our strategy focused on maintaining a safe position until the final stage. We successfully defended the yellow jersey across three stages. However, our fortunes took a turn for the worse when an unfortunate crash disrupted our plans. Stage 5 presented a daunting task as we had to swiftly regroup after the departure of Primož. Despite the setback, our team rallied admirably, securing a strong third place finish and only narrowly missing out on claiming the yellow jersey. Heading into the final stage, our objective was to defend our second position overall. Unfortunately, the challenging penultimate climb proved to be too tough, and we struggled to find our best legs. Nevertheless, the collective effort displayed by our team members was commendable, with each rider giving their best. Die von schweren Stürzen überschattete Baskenland-Rundfahrt ging mit der Königsetappe in Eibar zu Ende. Nach zwei Stürzen musste auch der zwischenzeitlich Gesamtführende und Sieger des Auftaktzeitfahrens, Primož Roglič, die Rundfahrt beenden. Glücklicherweise blieb der Slowene aber von Frakturen verschont. Auf der vorletzten Etappe schien sich das Blatt für das Team aus Raubling zu wenden. Maximilian Schachmann zeigte, dass er sich nach mehreren Verletzungen und Krankheiten auf dem Weg zur alten Stärke befindet. Mit einem Podestplatz auf der vorletzten Etappe und einem zweiten Rang in der Gesamtwertung ging der Deutsche auf die Schlussetappe. Das Finale um Eibar herum kündigte sich als entscheidend im Kampf um den Gesamtsieg an, da die ersten acht Fahrer nur durch 15 Sekunden getrennt waren. Maximilian konnte sich bis etwa 30 km vor dem Ziel in der Spitzengruppe halten. Als das Rennen jedoch im vorletzten schweren Izua-Anstieg auseinanderfiel, musste er seine Konkurrenten ziehen lassen. Beim Sieg von Carlos Rodríguez erreichte Maximilian letztlich das Ziel auf dem 26. Platz. Er belegte damit den 13. Platz im Gesamtklassement, während sein Teamkollege Jai Hindley die Etappe auf dem 14. Im Verlauf des Rennens lag unser Fokus darauf, eine gute Position bis zur finalen Etappe zu halten. Wir konnten das Gelbe Trikot erfolgreich über drei Etappen verteidigen. Doch unsere Glückssträhne endete abrupt, als ein unglücklicher Sturz unsere Pläne durchkreuzte. Die fünfte Etappe stellte eine große Herausforderung dar, da wir uns nach dem Ausscheiden von Primož, schnell neu formieren mussten. Trotz des Rückschlags kämpfte unser Team und sicherte sich einen starken dritten Platz, wobei wir nur knapp das Gelbe Trikot verfehlten. Für die Schlussetappe war unser Ziel, unsere zweite Position in der Gesamtwertung zu verteidigen. Leider erwies sich der anspruchsvolle, vorletzte Anstieg als zu schwer und wir hatten nicht die besten Beine. Dennoch verdienten die Anstrengungen unseres Teams Lob, da jeder Fahrer sein Bestes gab.
