Vuelta a San Juan: Fernando Gaviria wins stage 4 at reduced bunch sprint

Fernando Gaviria aims high in 2023, and his first stage win has already been taken as he won the fourth stage of the Vuelta a San Juan in a bunch sprint that saw some of the main riders missing.

The day had quite some climbing early on. The race organization struggled to update on the riders who were out in front but it is believed a large group managed to escape, but was caught early on in the day. The strong winds made it a nervous days, with some splits occuring that saw some riders miss out on the battle for the win.

However in the last hour of racing things settled down and a bunch sprint was inevitable. A reduced peloton however where some of the sprinters were missing. Filippo Ganna tried to surprise in the final kilometer but it was a tough ask with the sprinters just behind.

Fernando Gaviria launched his sprint from behind and managed to benefit on the slipstream of Ganna in the final straight where a crash took place. Gaviria beat Peter Sagan in the sprint, with Ganna finishing third.
