15-year old beats Dylan Groenewegen at local cyclocross race, gets nicknamed "future Mathieu van der Poel"

With the winter in full force, several pro riders have switched their focus to cyclocross in order to get some intensity in the long cold months. This recent trend has seen many make the change due to the apparent success of seasoned pros throughout the year, and Dylan Groenewegen has joined the group. However, most noticeable was the performance of a 15-year old rider that beat him this Sunday.

Groenewegen raced in the town of Het Twiske for a round of the Amsterdam Cross Competition where he rode into second place. He was beaten by Michiel Mouris who despite just recently turning 15 years old, is a reigning national champion in the Dutch youth ranks

Mouris got a lot of attention for the triumph, and has told NH News after the race: “It is very special to beat Dylan here. In the beginning I was in his wheel for a while, because Dylan drives very fast of course. On the technical parts I was always in the lead and I was able to make a gap.”

As for Groenewegen himself, he was asked about the young rider who's being termed the 'future Mathieu van der Poel': "Let's hope so. Although that is still very early to say, of course. He is Dutch champion with the youth ranks and they are already riding so fast these days. That shows that he is a very great talent. Now comes the time when he has to seriously engage in his sport.”
