"It was amazing that I could win" - Matevz Govekar on surprising win at Vuelta a Burgos

The fourth stage of the Vuelta a Burgos was an open one, with the puncheurs being the favourites for the day however eluded by a large breakaway that went up the road. The winner from the day was unexpected, as Bahrain - Victorious' most recent signing Matevz Govekar stormed to his first win within the team.

“Today was the plan in the team that if there was a big break, I try and join in the big break with 14 riders," Govekar said after the finish. "In the final, I followed the attacks. When I saw the break might come to the finish line, I started to work a little bit, and in the end, it was really perfect". The Slovenian managed to follow all the right moves, and had strong legs heading into the final hilltop at Ciudad Romana de Clunia.

He had won earlier this year the initial prologue of the Istrian Spring Trophy, however since signing with Bahrain back in June, his task to chase wins became much more complicated. A second place in the Slovenian national championships promised, and in Burgos he delivered. Part of the seven-man group that went on to fight for the win, Govekar timed his move well and had the explosiveness necessary to carry the most speed over the uphill sprint.

"I think everyone was pretty much on the limit, so I knew that there was quite a difficult finish, but I stayed in the front, and I know I have a really strong sprint, and in the last 300m, I started to go full gas. It was amazing that I could win," he concluded. The 22-year old has crossed out one goal from his list, and will today be of important support for the team's leaders in the queen stage of the race.
