Alejandro Valverde honoured with street name in Murcia

World road Alejandro Valverde will have a street named in his honour in his hometown of Murcia following his victory at the Road World Championships.

The street, to be named Alejandro Valverde Avenue, will intersect the street of another famous Spanish cycling champion — Avenida Miguel Indurain.

Valverde was born in Las Lumberas area of Murcia, just 10 minutes from the road that will be named after him.

He was given a rapturous welcome by fans upon on his return to the city earlier this month.

Valverde rode through the streets in an open-top car, with hundreds of people riding on their bikes behind him, before greeting fans from a balcony at the town hall.

The Spanish rider turned professional in 2002 and spent his first four years with Team Kelme. Team Movistar has supported him since.
