Talking to Erick Rowsell, winner of the Tour of Reservoir- “I had a bit of a point to prove coming here”
Interview – Reservoir Winner Erick Rowsell
Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis) The overall winner said after the podium presentation, “I had a bit of a point to prove coming here after pulling out of Normandy, so to come here and take the stage win yesterday and overall today, is fantastic. I don’t think I have been part of a team that put in a performance like that before.â€
“I am so proud of everyone. They rode so hard for me and every time one or two of them got dropped, they came back and rode on the front again and it so I can’t thank them enough. If I did not have that team, then it would have been a tough race for me.â€
“The hardest part in that race was in the beginning when Ian Bibby, Jonny McEvoy and Eddie Dunbar (all NFTO) attacked up the first climb. That was the hardest point in the race and we controlled that move and after that, we knew if we could control that, we could control anything.â€
“The team kept such a high tempo on the front on that last lap, riding out of their skins, no-one could get away and they put everyone into such a world of pain. It gave me, in a way, an armchair ride to the finish. It was still hard but it could have been a lot harder!â€
“It was bitterly cold out there but the guys in the team can handle that weather and thankfully it did brighten up at the end. I did Milan San Remo in those conditions for 300K which is different to 120k. We also had exactly the right type of clothing for that weather so it was not a big deal.â€
“Having Roger as DS in the car, is to have the best DS you could want in a situation like that. He has so much experience that when he comes up in the car, he can calm you down and hype you up and give you so much advice. We also had Mark McNally as the captain on the road so to have him and Roger in the car was perfect for us.â€
“For the season ahead, it’s quite simple; to win as many bike races as possible; both me and the team. I want to replicate what I did in 2012 and the team has a good programme like the Tour of Yorkshire soon so they’ll be big targets to get stuck in and see what we can do.â€
The team are now heading to Yorkshire to recce a stage and Erick says it’s going to be tough race but they are going there to get stuck in.
Finally, on Saturday afternoon , Erick won the first stage of the mens race and then his sister Joanna won the next stage. “For her to win this morning, I’m really pleased for her. I don’t think she was that confident coming into this race, and to come and win will boost her confidence hugely I think. She was always good on the road before venturing into the track scene and to be able to come back and win a race like will do her a world of good.â€
“I did say today at the start now that Joanna has won, I probably won’t because it always happens since we were kids. If one of us does well, on the same day, the other one won’t replicate it. If I have a good day, she’ll have a bad day (Saturday) and while I didn’t have a bad day, I didn’t win the stage (second)â€.
